On January 27 (Sun), February 9 (Sat) and 10 (Sun), the event “Anime Studio Meeting (Anista)” was held with WIT STUDIO as the main sponsor and studios CloverWorks, MAPPA and CoMix Wave Films as the guest companies. On the final day, February 10, various talk events were held at the two venues, Akihabara Entas, and Belsalle Akihabara, entitled as Meeting Day.
One of the events, “CloverWorks Creator Roundtable Discussion”, who participated in the company’s work so far: Atsushi Nishigori (DARLING in the FRANXX director), Tatsuyuki Nagai (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun director), Masayoshi Tanaka (DARLING in the FRANXX Chief animation director and character design), Toshifumi Akai (DARLING in the FRANXX assistant director and will be debuting as a director with Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Majū Sensen Babylonia), Miyuki Kuroki (The Idolm@ster SideM director and will be assisting Toshifumi Akai as an assistant director in Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Majū Sensen Babylonia) all these creators were on the stage. The talk started with the moderator Yūichi Fukushima, a producer at CloverWorks.
The first talk theme is about the production site of CloverWorks
Each talked about the situation in the CloverWorks studio. The most common thing in that opinion is “being beautiful.” When I hear that it is an anime studio, the image that is really scattered is strong. However, the creators who actually work at CloverWorks had the impression that their studio was always kept clean.
During that time, the topic was about when each met for the first time. When they were working on what kind of work, the talk progressed in a peaceful mood while talking about what they had met for the first time.
The next talk theme is “About my career path”
The moderator of the forum Fukushima-san asked about the careers of each one of them, and each talked about memories and turning points when they entered the industry. However, no one had clearly decided on their own path immediately after entering the industry, and as a result of desperately working on the task in front of them, most of them ended in the current position. Among them, everyone has had the experience of hitting a wall, and it was settled on the conclusion that the career after that will be decided depending on what can be learned from there.
After that, with questions and answers with the visitors, the theme on the agenda was “Problems in the anime studio scene”
With many animated works being produced, securing reliable human resources has become a problem for the whole industry, and popular creators are often linked. When the moderator Fukushima-san heard about the situation, the speakers talked about the current state of the animation industry based on their own experiences. Sometimes it seems that it is difficult for us to receive requests for work suddenly from staff who have not had a relationship with us so far. After all, the relationship of trust between people shows that it is a well-established industry.
And the talk is the last theme “The Future of Anime”
Nowadays, animation can be viewed at any time in various environments such as PCs and smartphones as well as TVs. After understanding the current situation, among the speakers, it was said that “simultaneity” will be more valuable in the future. It was expected that there would be a place where it could be enjoyed in the same space as people with similar interests, such as cheer screenings at theaters, and that smaller event would also increase.
In this way, the fantastic creators meet in one hall, and the precious stage also approaches one hour scheduled, and it ends here. However, visitors were also highly satisfied with the content that they had from their careers to current industry problems and even the future of anime.
There are a few more talk reports that I want to bring from Wit studio and MAPPA and the final report. So, expect more content coming from Anime Studio Meeting (Anista) in the near future.
