This week was a great one for the current long-run shonen airing. We had a few good episodes direction and animation wise during the week, also some really good adaptations of this new season maintaining their consistency. Let’s embark on it!
Episode #92 Staff:
Storyboards: Yukihiro Matsushita
Episode Director: Akira Shimizu
Chief Animation Director: Hiroyuki Shirashima
Animation Directors: Keizō Shimizu, Aya Nasuno, Shinya Nogami, Taihei Nagai
Black Clover brought us another great action-packed episode, this time featuring Wizard King vs Licht. The fight was filled with high pace action with a great background animation that followed the frenetic movements of the characters. Overall it was a nice “first half” of the fight with a beautifully polished art and some interesting shots. The next episode will end this fight, and with the series director, Tatsuya Yoshihara’s storyboards, of may as well except an amazing displaying of high-quality animation with amazing choreography and a lot of great effects.
Episode #03 Staff:
Storyboards, Episode Director: Hideaki Oba
Chief Animation Director: Yuko Iwasa, Kenji Terao
Animation Directors: Shuhei Fukuda, Kohei Ashiya, Gamari Tomina
Action Animation Director: Hiroyuki Horiuchi
Layout Animation Director: Yoshio Mizumura
Dr. Stone prove me wrong about its manga coverage, I thought that with chapter one being worth for like 2 chapters and with chapter 2 that also was adapted on the first episode, the anime may should to adapt 3 chapters per episode. It looks like after seeing those 3 episodes the anime will follow the usual shonen jump formula of 2 chapters per episode, which means that we’ll probably reach only the first part of the “Stone War” which is a pretty decent goal.
Talking about the episode, it was a good watch overall. It didn’t stray away too much from the manga except some slight differences, and in terms of art, it was decent. I’m glad they didn’t reduce or cut any comedic moment from the manga since that’s one of its biggest strengths.
We already know from the bat that we won’t get presented with much of fluid animation, but this episode had a short nice sequence from Tsukasa vs Taiju.
Fairy Tail 3
Episode #41 Staff:
Storyboards: Shinji Ishihira
Episode Directors: Fumio Ito
Chief Animation Director: Hatsue Nakayama
Animation Directors: Masahiko Inuzuka
This 41st episode of Fairy Tail was probably the biggest surprise of the week, not that I didn’t expect some at least decent animation for this climatic cour but this episode August vs Gildarts delivered with such a great way.
Glady we had a great duo for this episode which was Fumio Ito and the series director Shinji Ishihira. Ishihira is not only a director but also an incredible storyboarder, recently we did boards for Black Clover, some major My Hero 3 episodes as well in its movie. He’s storyboards on this episode elevated the fight to an all another level comparing to the rest of the season.
The beautiful close-up shots and great choreography with an amazing background animation made this one of the most enjoyable to watch fights of all the series. We may have some great highlights from the next episode as well, so, stay tuned.
Episode #894 Staff:
Episode Director: Aya Komaki
Animation Director: Yusuke Isouchi
The episode 894 of One Piece wasn’t so an episode filled with lots of great animation, Tama little filler scene was probably the animation highlight of the episode, but instead, it was an amazing display of direction and a great adaptation animation by Aya Komaki with Yusuke Isouchi’s supervision.
As a manga reader, I couldn’t have asked for more, comparing this episode with the manga I only have to say that the anime adaptation was way superior. Not all shots were a 1 on 1 adaptation from the manga, which was good, and the way the episode was put together timely it gave a much superior experience overall.
With some anime exclusive shots, and some greatly enhanced from the manga with great coloring and composite, adding the direction and writing made this episode the most enjoyable of Wano thus far. And… don’t forget, protect Tama at all costs.
Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru #03
Another fun episode on Dumbbell, the over the top expressions throughout the episode was hilarious, also a couple of good dynamic exercises tutorials. Adding to the new best waifu of the show… And this scene animated by Kyouko Kon has some really nice and detailed movements.
Lord El-Melloi II Sei no Jikenbo: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note #03
El-Melloi II keeps on delivering nice action sequences each episode, this time with this really nice animated lightning effects and fight sequence.
Joshikousei no Mudadzukai #03
Joshikousei might be one of the most low key animes of the season, but each episode is able to take a laugh from me. This scene is the best example of that, a really silly and nonsense scene with great use of camera rotation (maybe a little too much), but it was interesting, to say the least.
